Runway’s App Studio Brings No-Code App Building to AI Filmmaking
Runway App Studio lets you build custom image, video, and audio apps just by describing them, from recasting scenes to character sheets and table reads. It’s included in every paid plan.
Runway has launched App Studio, a tool for building custom creative apps just by describing them. The apps use Runway’s image, video, and audio models, and they can be kept private, shared with a team, or published with a public link.
App Studio is included in every paid Runway plan, and building and running apps uses the credits you already have.
How App Studio Works
You start by describing what you want an app to do. App Studio writes the code, tests it, and hosts it, with no coding, API keys, or hosting to manage.
From there, you refine the app in plain language and can roll back changes if something breaks. Apps can also pull from your Runway Brand Kits and reference files, which helps keep results consistent for a brand or project.
Runway’s Example Apps

Runway launched App Studio with five example apps, several of them aimed at filmmakers.
Character Swap recasts a scene without reshooting. You upload a video and a new character, and the scene plays out with someone new. Runway says the app runs on ByteDance’s Seedance 2.5.
Style Out builds a lineup of characters, lets you style their hair, makeup, and wardrobe, then turns each one into a character sheet. For why character sheets matter, see How to Keep Characters Consistent in AI Video.
Table Read lets you hear a script before you shoot it, assigning a different voice to each character and playing the scene out loud.
Precise Edit retouches only the areas you mark up on an image, leaving everything else untouched. Product Shoot turns a single product photo into a full campaign in new settings and styles.
Sharing and Team Controls

Apps stay private until you share them. You can share with teammates or publish a public link, but anyone using an app has to sign in, and people using a public link spend their own credits.
For teams, admins can see usage across every app and control access. Any models an admin has disabled are automatically blocked inside apps too.
What It Costs

App Studio is included in all paid Runway plans, which start at $15 per month for Standard. There’s no separate add-on, but building and running apps, including hosting, uses your plan’s credits.
Runway hasn’t published usage limits for App Studio.
Competitive Context

Runway has been turning itself into a broader creative platform, adding outside models like Seedance 2.5 and Kling and launching community programs, covered in Runway Launches a Weekly AI Video Challenge With 175,000 Credits in Prizes.
App Studio also fits a wider trend of AI tools building custom workflows on demand. Claude skills like Scenario’s Alter offer similar performance-preserving edits, covered in A Free Claude Skill Now Does Genjutsu-Style Video Edits.
The difference is that App Studio keeps everything inside Runway, so there’s no command-line setup, and apps can be shared with a team right away.
The Signal in the Noise
For filmmakers, the most useful idea here is building small tools for specific jobs, like a table read app for script development or a character sheet tool for pre-production. That kind of custom tooling used to require a developer.
How useful App Studio is will depend on how reliably it builds what you describe and how many credits apps use. Since it’s included in paid plans, it’s easy to test with a simple app first.
